Cypriol in perfumery: the smoky root from India
Portrait of cypriol, a root from India's wetlands
Cypriol comes from Cyperus scariosus, a sedge from the wetlands of northern India. It is neither a wood nor a resin: the fragrant material hides in the rhizome, which is harvested by hand and then dried for several weeks. Steam distillation of these roots yields a thick, dark-brown oil known locally as nagarmotha. India remains its primary producer, where the plant has long been used in traditional medicine and to scent textiles. Western perfumery adopted it later, enticed by a material capable of evoking burnt wood without resorting to oud, which is rarer and more expensive.
What does cypriol smell like?
Cypriol opens with an impression of dry earth and cold smoke, like a fire extinguished the night before. This is followed by deep woody facets, a green bitterness similar to vetiver, and then a distinctly leathery, almost animalic base. Some perceive charred paper, others blond tobacco or cooled incense. On the skin, the material changes little: it warms up and softens, but retains its smoky backbone for many hours. It is a very tenacious base note, with a presence that is noticeable without being overwhelming. Used in overdose, it darkens an entire composition; used in touches, it adds texture and depth.

Rouge Smoking Extraitby BDK Parfumsplaces cypriol under an accord of black cherry and tobacco: the root plays the role of the shadow, preventing the fruit from becoming too candy-like. At Atelier des Ors, Cuir Sacréleans it against leather and resins for a dense, dry, church-like smoke. Bois roi d'Agallocheby Serge Lutensincorporates it into an interpretation of precious wood, where the Indian root extends the agarwood. Finally, OUD SAFRANby La Closerie des Parfumsuses it to support a saffron-oud duo, giving it earthiness and an unusual longevity.
Accords and olfactory families
Cypriol pairs first and foremost with dark materials. It extends patchouli, densifies incense, and adds texture to leatheraccords. Saffronwarms it up and directs it toward a more mineral register; citrus, by contrast, brightens its opening and makes its bitterness more legible. It is logically found in woodyand smokycompositions, but also in contemporary leathers, where it replaces the tarry notes of the past. Some dark florals use it as a counterpoint to prevent a bouquet from becoming too tame. It also pairs very well with resins and balsams, which round out its dryness without removing its smokiness.
For whom, and when?
Cypriol has no gender. It is often associated with masculine perfumes because it occupies the same territory as vetiver, but it works just as well on feminine skin, where its smoke takes on a more enveloping quality. Noses featured in our selection, such as Aliénor Massenet, use it without drawing any boundaries. It is an autumn and winter material: the cold keeps its smoke close to the body and extends its persistence. In summer, save it for the evening. As for personality, it speaks to lovers of understated, slightly austere scents who prefer texture to showiness.
How to choose your cypriol perfume?
Start by identifying what you are looking for: dry smoke, leather, or deep wood. Since cypriol is never alone in the top notes, its surroundings determine its final character. Then test it at home over several days: our bespoke discovery boxcontains five hand-filled 2 mL samples, enough to compare without fatiguing the nose. Silver Ceremonyoffers a more luminous entry point, useful if the smoke intimidates you. If you are visiting Lille, an assisted trial in the boutique remains the safest way: we spray it, let it dry, and return an hour later.
