The story

La Mer: the American anti-ageing icon born of an obsession

The story of a miracle cream

La Mer is an American skincare house born of an obsession: that of Dr Max Huber, a NASA aerospace physicist who, after a chemical accident, spent twelve years searching for the miracle formula to repair his skin. He developed the Miracle Broth, a concentrate of fermented sea kelp that became the heart of every La Mer formulation. Now owned by Estée Lauder, the house carries on this expertise and remains one of the world's benchmarks in premium anti-ageing skincare.

The iconic treatments of the American house

The La Mer pantheon includes La Crème Soyeuse Régénération Intense, La Crème Régénération Intense, Le Fond de Teint Soyeux Régénérant Longue Tenue SPF 20, Le Baume pour les Yeux Intense and Le Concentré, each an emblematic signature of the house.

Exceptional skincare powered by the Miracle Broth

Every La Mer creation shares a recognisable signature: the Miracle Broth, a concentrate of sea kelp fermented for months according to Dr Huber's process. The house offers its treatments across several specialised ranges, built around the iconic Crème de la Mer, the Concentrate, the Regenerating Serum and high-precision eye care.

Who is La Mer for, and when to use it?

La Mer is designed for lovers of premium anti-ageing skincare seeking iconic treatments with visible results. The house caters to all skin types, with particular expertise in mature and demanding skin. Frequently asked questions about La Mer

Who is behind the La Mer brand?

La Mer was born of the personal story of Dr Max Huber, an American aerospace physicist. After suffering severe facial burns in a laboratory accident in the 1950s, he devoted the next 12 years and 6,000 experiments to developing a cream capable of transforming his skin. His discovery of the Miracle Broth™ — a ferment of giant sea kelp — gave birth to the legendary Crème de La Mer. The brand joined the Estée Lauder group in 1995.

What is the Miracle Broth™?

The Miracle Broth™ is the signature ingredient found throughout La Mer skincare. It is an elixir obtained from the bio-fermentation of giant sea kelp hand-harvested off the Pacific coast, combined with calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, lecithin, vitamins C, E and B12, as well as essential oils of citrus, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower. Fermentation lasts 3 to 4 months before this patented active ingredient, with exceptional regenerating properties, is obtained.

What are La Mer's best-sellers?

Crème de la Mer remains the absolute icon — nicknamed the "Rolls-Royce of creams". It comes in several textures to suit every skin type (original Crème, Soft Cream, Moisturizing Lotion). The Concentrate (repairing serum), The Eye Concentrate (eye contour) and The Renewal Oil round out a complete routine. All benefit from the Miracle Broth™ that defines the house.

How can I try a La Mer product before buying it?

The best way to discover a La Mer product before buying is to come to our Lille shop and meet Apolline and Victorine. They can assess your skin type, needs and sensory preferences, show you the textures and point you towards the right products. You can also choose free Click & Collect: order online, collect in store. For online orders, feel free to contact us beforehand by phone or via the form — we take the time to advise you according to your profile. Please note: for hygiene reasons, opened skincare products cannot be returned.

How should Crème de La Mer be applied?

It is a precise ritual: take a small amount with the spatula, warm the cream between your fingers for a few seconds until it becomes translucent. Then press it gently onto the face and neck, without rubbing. This thermal "activation" releases the active ingredients of the Miracle Broth™ and partly explains its perceived effectiveness. Consistency — morning and evening — makes all the difference in the long run. Our face care selection brings together the premium niche offering.
