Narcissus Perfume – green, animalic and narcotic floral

Narcissus in perfumery: a green and animal flower

Narcissus, an absolute from high ground

The narcissus of perfumery is Narcissus poeticus, the one that grows wild on the plateaux of the Massif Central, in Lozère and on the Aubrac. Picking happens in spring, by hand, over a few weeks only, and it takes a considerable quantity of flowers to obtain a little absolute — which makes it one of the costliest materials in the palette, alongside iris and osmanthus. Jonquil, its cousin, gives a neighbouring but distinct material. Unlike peony or lily of the valley, narcissus really is a natural material, and you can hear it.

What does narcissus smell like?

Narcissus always surprises on first acquaintance. The opening is green and harsh, almost herbaceous, with a facet of cut hay and crushed stem. Then comes a thick, honeyed floral heart, doubled by a clear animal note — leather, horsehair, skin — that comes from the indoles and sulphur molecules present in the flower. The base is earthy and powdery. Nothing luminous about it: narcissus is a flower of shade, closer to leather and tobacco than to a spring bouquet. Its power is such that it is almost always used in very small quantities, where it lends relief and an impression of lived experience.

Narcissus perfumes at Soleil d'Or

Narcisse Blanc by Caron is the absolute classic of the genre, a powdery, veiled reading dating from 1922. Narcisse Taiji by Atelier Materi gives instead a contemporary, materials-led reading centred on the absolute itself. At Memo, Shams Narcissus and Siwa take it towards the solar and the amber. Quelques Fleurs Jardin Secret by Houbigant sets it in a grand bouquet, and Le Chèvrefeuille by Goutal keeps its green, country side.

Accords and fragrance families

Narcissus belongs to floral perfumes but pulls towards chypre as soon as it is given a base. With oakmoss and patchouli it composes green, earthy accords of great depth. Jasmine and tuberose amplify its animal part; iris and violet temper it into powder. Coumarinic hay and galbanum extend its greenness. It is a structuring material: compositions where you hear it as a soloist are rare.

Who is it for, and when?

Narcissus is not for beginners in florals. Its animal part and harsh greenness ask that you like flowers with character, and it frankly disconcerts anyone expecting an agreeable bouquet. It is shared by nature: its powdery readings are more often worn as feminine, its hay-like and leathery ones as masculine. Its natural season is the in-between, cool spring and autumn, where its greenness and its warmth answer each other. It suits people who love chypres and vintage perfumes, and who want a flower that does not smell of flowers. On warm skin the animal side comes forward clearly.

How to choose a narcissus perfume

Since narcissus is rarely used alone, the real question is its company: do you prefer a powdery, veiled reading or a green, animal one? The made-to-measure discovery box gathers five 2 mL samples filled by hand, and leaves time to tame a material that is poorly judged in thirty seconds on a blotter. To frame the span, try Narcisse Blanc on one side and Narcisse Taiji on the other. You can also visit the Lille boutique, where the team lets you smell the absolute first, then the compositions.

Narcissus at Soleil d'Or, a Lille perfumery since 1953

Founded in 1953 by Jeanne Muyllaert on the Grand'Place in Lille, Soleil d'Or is an independent perfumery passed down through the generations. Hubert Maës (third generation) made it a niche perfumery reference; today his daughters Victorine and Apolline Maës (fourth generation) uphold that standard at 22 rue de la Clef, Lille (59800). Our team walks you through every narcissus fragrance in the catalogue with expert advice and guided trials, and can point you to our guide to fragrance families.
