Cistus in perfumery: the shrub of the garrigue

Cistus and labdanum: one plant, two materials

This is the first thing to settle, because the two words circulate as though they were interchangeable. Cistus is the plant: Cistus ladaniferus, a tough shrub about a metre and a half high that colonises the poor, sun-scorched soils of Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Crete, with crumpled white flowers that last only a day. Labdanum is the sticky gum its leaves exude in summer to protect themselves from drought. They are therefore two entries for the same plant, not two species. What changes the material is the process: cistus essence is obtained by steam distillation of the twigs and leaves, while labdanum is extracted from the harvested gum and then purified into a resinoid and an absolute. What does cistus smell like?

Of the garrigue in full sun, above all: a dry, aromatic, slightly camphorous greenness, with the bitterness of a crushed leaf and a mineral, almost dusty edge. The resin is there too, but held in the background and far harsher than in the gum. That is exactly what separates the two materials: labdanum is ambery, honeyed, leathery and enveloping; cistus essence is greener, more herbaceous, rougher, with a severity that recalls cypress and sage as much as resin. It is almost never used on its own: its job is to give relief and a dry edge to a base that would otherwise be too smooth. On skin it lasts a long time and softens towards amber by the end of the day.

Cistus perfumes at Soleil d'Or

La Liturgie des Heures by Jovoy Paris gives the most literal reading: cistus sits beside incense and myrrh over a cypress opening, and we are firmly in dry resin. Cistus accords and fragrance families

Cistus works mainly in the base. With oakmoss and patchouli it gives chypre perfumes their earthy footing and their bitterness. With incense, myrrh and benzoin it composes the resin accords that contemporary perfumery files under oriental perfumes. Its greenness brings it naturally close to aromatic perfumes and green perfumes, alongside lavender, sage and rosemary — the landscape of the garrigue put back together. Finally, mixed with leather and tobacco, it hardens leather perfumes and strips them of any needless roundness.

Who is it for, and when?

Cistus is unisex without argument: it is a note of texture, not of gender. It suits people who find ambers too sweet and want the same warmth with an edge. Its ground is autumn and winter, and more generally cool days where its resinous dryness settles well; in high summer it can seem hard at first, but the sunlit compositions that use it hold up very well in the evening. It is a base material, tenacious, and it stays on clothing. It is worth saying plainly: if you are looking for a perfume that smells of the garrigue and of the cistus flower, you will not find it — the flower yields nothing in perfumery, everything comes from the leaf and the gum.

How to choose your cistus perfume

The question to settle first is whether it is cistus or labdanum that you are after: the parent plant gives a harsh, resinous greenness, the gum a leathery honeyed amber. The two are often in the same bottle, but one of them always leads. Try it on skin rather than on a blotter, and let two hours pass: cistus is not judged on the opening, where it is no more than a green bitterness.
