Lavande Romaine is a mystical journey through Haute-Provence, that desert of rocks dotted with rare trees, where only the great lavender bushes quiver under gusts of the mistral. Even when the evenings are no longer lit by the fires beneath the stills so dear to Jean Giono, this pure, virginal perfume remains the soul of this land.

For the Romans, lavender scented the water of their ablutions — lavanda means “for washing”. Their legions spread it throughout Europe, but it is here that it embraced the landscape until it became its emblem, as unforgettable as a blue-violet gaze.

A lover of this rugged nature, Jean-Claude Ellena has delivered an extraordinary page from his book of smell: fine lavender at the top, blackcurrant buds and blue cedar at the heart, white musk in the base. A fragrant painting where blue butterflies flutter at sunset — authentic and luminous, like Provence.

Jean-Claude Ellena, born in Grasse in 1947, is one of the greatest contemporary perfumers and was Hermès' exclusive in-house nose.
